Meeting Announcement

September 21 Meeting: Learning in Second Life

Since opening to the public in 2003, Second Life has grown explosively and today is inhabited by 560,000 people from around the globe. Almost every week, articles are appearing in the press or the blogosphere exploring various aspects of Second Life. However, relatively little analysis and discussion has so far taken place regarding the future potential of Second Life to transform corporate learning and training as we know it. We are very fortunate to welcome Joe join us to discuss and demonstrate Second Life. He has a long and distinguished career in the field of learning and learning technology. Joe was a founder and CEO of the Knowledge Universe Interactive Studio, and has held executive positions in a number of learning companies prior to joining Linden Lab.

After a demonstration of what Second Life is, how it works, and how it has been used so far by individuals and organizations, we will have plenty of time for group-based discussions to explore various issues related to this kind of technology-based learning approach. Some questions we may want to explore with Joe and among the Forum members include:
  • What are the opportunities and challenges companies interested in using this kind of virtual environment for learning and training will likely face?
  • What can we learn from the early adopters that have already started testing this new form of learning environment?
  • What issues were raised by eLearning Forum members who participated in the pre-meeting survey we are conducting about 3-D virtual learning environments?

Please click here to take the short pre-meeting survey--thanks!
