"Most training in organisations still takes place on a very formal basis using the traditional training object - the 'course'. However, it is now well recognised that something like 70% of learning actually takes place informally in organisations, i.e. not in the classroom nor working through an online course, but in everyday working life as employees carry out their jobs - finding out information, reading documents, talking to other colleagues etc. It is these kinds of informal learning activities that need to be supported and encouraged online. E-learning is therefore not just about e-training but also about information, communication, collaboration, performance support and knowledge sharing."

September Meeting Alert—“Learning in Second Life”
Please mark your calendars. You don’t want to miss the September 21 eLearning Forum meeting at APPLE COMPUTER. The meeting will explore Next-Generation Learning and Training—and what today’s “Millenials” or Gen Y workers want right now (instead of our traditional, course-based training classes).
Joe Miller, Vice President of Platform and Technology Development at Linden Lab, the SF-based company that has developed the Second Life environment (see www.secondlife.com or go to Wikipedia—http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life—to see a more in depth description), will come and demonstrate and discuss what is going on in their 3-D virtual world, built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by 370,000 people from around the globe. Joe was a founder and CEO of the Knowledge Universe Interactive Studio, and has held executive positions in a number of learning companies prior to joining Linden Lab.
For members who cannot attend this meeting in person, remote access will be available. Details will be provided in subsequent announcements about this event and on the eLearning Forum website. Please stay tuned.
We look forward to seeing you on September 21. Register early to reserve your place. A more detailed meeting announcement will follow in early September and will also be posted on our website: http://www.eLearningForum.com
