March 2006: Mobile Learning--Where are we today and where are we heading?
Today, a wide range of mobile devices are supporting learning and knowledge work in the workplace and in educational institutions (both schools and universities)—and the number and types of innovative devices are exploding. At the same time, the infrastructure—especially wireless networks—are expanding rapidly and giving us high-speed Internet access in more and more places. The result is dramatic change and new opportunities to change how we work and learn. This eLearning Forum meeting will examine a number of questions about these trends and developments to gain better understanding of what we can realistically expect to see in the next few years.
We have a diverse set of speakers who will be able to address mobile learning from a number of different perspectives, to examine not only changes in the underlying and enabling technology, but also content issues as well as social and cultural aspects of mobile learning. We will also discuss what various Silicon Valley players are doing on both the user and vendor front. Companies like Genentech, for instance, understand the new opportunities that mobile learning can have—including for their sales force—and are preparing strategic initiatives. And companies like Intel, HP, Adobe and others have long been actively involved in mobile learning and are continuing to bring innovative mobile solutions to market.
