February Meeting: “Perspectives and Interactive Discussion around eLearning 2.0”

The topic for theFebruary Forum is eLearning 2.0. It is gaining a lot of attention and interest in our industry, partly as a result of an excellent article with the same name by Stephen Downes, Senior Researcher at the National Research Council Canada and one of the most insightful analysts of learning and learning technology.  Stephen has agreed to kick off our meeting and discuss some of the key issues of his article and set the context and stage for the subsequent presenters and for the interactive discussion we will have during the meeting.

Bill Bruck, Ph.D, lead solutions architect for Q2Learning, will discuss web 2.0 tools and collaboration platforms that can support organizational learning, focusing on aligning the nature of learning desired with the capability of the tools available. He will also share some of the insights from the ongoing Learning 2.0 Summit - an online event involving a number of thought leaders in the learning space who have gathered to address these issues.

And Lucy Carter, Director, Worldwide Sales Training and Communications at Apple Computer, will present her perspectives and views of this changing world of learning and learning tools and technologies in the context of the critical business issues and challenges that Lucy and her colleagues are facing at Apple.

eLearning 2.0 reflects and results from important business and technology trends that are happening around us, as the Internet is undergoing dramatic change. These changes enable new types of business processes and result in shifting competitive advantage among companies, industries, and countries—as we heard from John Hagel at our January meeting. Some of the changes we are now witnessing that we will have an interactive discussion about include:

  • A new role for learners—as active learners, contributing content and knowledge, making connections, and building relationships for informal learning enabled by technology
  • New levels of conversations—often global—as greater recognition is given to learning as a social activity often coming about through social networking and enabled by technology
  • Open, unstructured content—in various formats and different media (increasingly in audio and video format) and found through search and personal references
  • Shift from read to write—more and more learners are contributing content and knowledge, shifting from being just passive consumers of courses designed by others
  • Combination of pull and push—Content, knowledge and connections are increasingly relevant and personal, driven by a company’s and an individual’s personal and/or professional needs
  • The meeting format will be highly interactive. Stephen, John, and Lucy will help us gain perspectives and context as a means to stimulating an active discussion among you who attend and to hear how you see eLearning 2.0 being realized in your organizations. What do these developments mean for you, for learning professionals in general, and how will it affect business performance by making learning more effective?
