June 2001 Session in Menlo Park

Peer-to-Peer

Thirty-five people attended our June meeting, including Wayne Hodgins in San Raphael and Hal RIchman in Nova Scotia who joined in via Groove.

Here's the presentation in PDF.

I'm writing a description of the session and hope to have an asynchronous replay here soon. In the meantime, join us in Groove.

Gnutella is an Open Source P2P platform for file-sharing. Unlike Napster, to which it's compared, Gnutella has no central server. As they put it, Gnutella is lawyer-proof, because there's no one to sue. If you're technically inclined, you might want to check out the Gnutella Protocol Specifications.
Lots of people who once visited Napster are now logging in at LimeWire, a front-end and extension of Gnutella.

Weblogs

Freenet is so anonymous the FBI won't be able to track you down. This is bound to be a terrorist favorite.
